The Good Book Stall

Daily prayer is really important, according to popular Catholic writer Bert Ghezzi, because it “directs us in doing God’s work… and occasions our becoming little Christs”. Its ‘key elements’ are “coming into God’s presence, immersion in the Holy Spirit, reflecting on Scripture, listening to God and interceding with faith”.   
Of course, it requires discipline. But it takes more than willpower. “My will is not strong enough to get me to resist a slice of carrot cake, let alone to get me on my knees every morning. Only by grace have I been able to persevere.” I am sure this book will inspire many readers – and not just Catholics – who seek a more ‘robust’ prayer life. In the chapter ‘Listening to God’, Ghezzi refers warmly to “aha experiences”, where a thought comes directly from God. He gives as an example this 1975 ‘wake-up call’ from God: “You are paying more attention to this book” (his first) “than you are to your family.” He had to respond. That is just one of many personal illustrations. Some of them are very honest, including the fact that “my worst prayer experience” was being caught and fined for speeding while praying. I liked the notion of ‘bumping into God’, particularly enjoyed the chapters on intercession and was interested to read what Ghezzi wrote about how making the sign of the cross has helped him grow in Christ. He refers to lectio divina and reflects on some practical issues such as distractions and darkness, doubt and unanswered prayer, but frankly I didn’t feel he added anything to what you can find elsewhere. But maybe this will be just the book to get you started. And what I did find helpful was the section at the end of each chapter, setting out some probing questions about our discipleship and prayer life, and offering stimulating suggestions for reflection and action.
