The Good Book Stall

This book is a brilliant resource for anyone working with children. Whether it is for school, church services, Sunday school, holiday clubs or for family use at home this book is a gold mine of ideas for celebrating the major events in the church year with children. I entirely agree with the author that the book "is an attempt to make the great feasts of Christianity accessible to children in a way that does not dilute their ability to instil awe, wonder and joy" and would add that her attempt is a hugely successful one. The author clearly explains why good liturgy for children is important and her discussion of the theology and reasons behind the approach and content of the book is both well informed and engaging. Indeed, the book is probably as useful as a guide for how to think about children's work, especially children's services, as it is a source of ideas.

The book covers a traditional selection of events, namely: Harvest, All Saints / All Souls, Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Easter and Pentecost; the author provides for each a liturgy, suggestions for adding a Eucharist to the liturgy, suggestions for adapting the ideas for use in schools, and ideas for extension activities and for activities at home.

This book was a joy to read. Both the ideas and the approach to children's work will be enormously useful and informative for me personally in the future. If there were to be only one book on children's work available, this should definitely find a place high on the short list.
