Along the way she explores the core Christian concepts of redemption, atonement and resurrection from the perspective of justice-making in the real world, pursuing a spirituality of perseverance and steadfastness ('sumud') deriving from her work with Middle Eastern Christians. The book draws on all four Gospels and the book of Revelation, providing biblical inspiration for the quest for peace. It focuses on the real-life stories of people living through conflict in well-known Holy Land sites in Galilee and Jerusalem - and other biblical places, such as Mt Sinai, and explains the issues and initiatives around the Jewish-Christian-Muslim search for peace. It also offers feminist perspectives on redemption/atonement within this context. This book is ideal Lent reading, with study materials and questions for group discussions or personal reflection.

Mary C. Grey is Emeritus Professor of Theology at the University of Wales, Lampeter, a fellow at Sarum College, Salisbury, and visiting Professor at St Mary's University College, Twickenham. She is also a member of Sabeel, an ecumenical grassroots liberation theology movement among Palestinian Christians, and is the author of several books, including To Rwanda and Back: Liberation Spirituality and Reconciliation (DLT, 2007) and The Advent of Peace (SPCK, 2010).

The Good Book Stall

Like any pilgrimage, this one into the land that is called holy by Christians, Jews and Muslims will lead the reader deeply into reflection, with extremely thoughtful "Questions for Reflection" at the end of each chapter, and into what Professor Grey calls "a new seeing". Her passion for justice is infectious, as is her pain over the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people. The Bible inspires her as she seeks answers for "peace and conflict resolution" in Israel / Palestine. That is certainly the main issue that Mary Grey tackles, though she does refer to some other questions including the situation of Christians in the "Arab Spring" since 2010. She believes that Jesus' message was "socially, politically and economically revolutionary" and that the "Jesus movement" sought the "transformation of the Roman regime of violence and oppression into an alternative society of justice, peace, forgiveness and love". Also, Resurrection hope underlies the pilgrimage. I especially appreciated the sections on "sumud" (a spirituality of "steadfastness, persistence and patient endurance"), the Via Dolorosa, and the Bedouins of the Negev desert. Further, Mary Grey names many inspiring campaigners for peace and justice, and refers the reader to Sabeel, a movement of liberation theology among Palestinian Christians, with which she is associated. Definitely a book to read if you care about the Holy Land today!
