Karl W Giberson is an internationally known scholar of science and religion and one of America's leading participants in the creation/ evolution debate. Giberson is on the faculty of Eastern Nazarene College, where he teaches interdisciplinary honours seminars and the history of science. Francis S Collins is a world renowned geneticist. The authors, renowned scientists, are both committed Christians, believing in God the Creator, who has revealed himself in two ways, the Bible and nature. They seek a harmony between the insights drawn from those two ways, in which both are respected and taken seriously. They deal with the ‘independence model’ of the relationship between science and faith, and also with the ‘warfare metaphor’ (“the enduring but discredited myth that science and religion have forever been in conflict”). Their primary goal in this book about evolution is “understanding the message of the Genesis creation accounts, the focal point of so much of the controversy over evolution”. What they put forward is theistic evolution, “the belief that God created life using natural processes, working within the natural order, in harmony with its laws”. They spell the theory out for us in three points: All current species have descended from common ancestors; Changes in species occur gradually over time as a consequence of mutations; Species change when beneficial mutations allow certain of them to have more offspring than others.   
A mountain of scientific data, they argue, supports an age of around 4.5 billion years for the earth and about 14 billion years for the universe, and it all began with a ‘big bang’. They write this in the face of, and in clear disagreement with, the strong and very vocal anti-evolution lobby in some parts of the church, such as young, and old, earth creationism, the Reasons to Believe Organisation, the Intelligent Design Movement and any literal interpretations of Genesis 1 and 2 (they do devote several pages in Chapter 3 to the whole matter of biblical hermeneutics). They reject the claim sometimes made that many scientists are abandoning evolution, or that few premier scientists any longer believe in Darwin’s evolution as simply untrue.   
This book will ruffle a lot of feathers in the anti-Darwin lobby, but why should that be the only Christian voice allowed to be heard? I warmly recommend it, and its new vision of creation in the closing pages.
