This book represents the ongoing collaboration between Staff in Mount St Mary's University in the United States. An 'Introduction', gives a succinct overview of the thirteen chapters divided into four parts, 'Sources', 'Love', 'Justice' and 'Moving Forward'. Each chapter concludes with a 'Discussion' of a relevant point, and many also ask 'What can we do?’   
Naturally, this is primarily meant for a North American audience, but readers from other countries will not find this overly constricting. For example, chapter 10 on 'The Catholic Worker Movement and the Challenge of Voluntary Poverty', its 'Discussion' on 'Household Hospitality' and the counter-cultural suggestions in 'What Can We Do?', will resonate with us here in Britain and Ireland. Notes at the end of the book include references; there is not a separate bibliography, and the 'Index' is selective. While the 1992 collection of documents, 'Catholic Social Thought: The Documentary Heritage' (Maryknoll), is mentioned, the Vatican's 2004 'Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church' does not appear.  
One looks forward to an updated edition in a few years, which will include the recent encyclical, 'Caritas in Veritate'. Catholic social doctrine is never static.
