The Rt Revd John Pritchard is Bishop of Jarrow. He was Archdeacon of Canterbury and, before that, Warden of Cranmer Hall, Durham. He has written several books for SPCK, including the bestselling Intercessions Handbook (1997) and its follow-up The Second Intercessions (November 2004); Beginning Again; Living the Gospel Stories Today (2001),, and How to Pray (2002).

The Church of England needed a book for those who were thinking about ordained priesthood; we have, for many years depended on the wonderful writings of Robert Martineau and Michael Ramsay, which were the set books for ministerial commitment. Now, John Pritchard has produced this wonderful volume which must become the set book for ordinands. The content is refreshingly sane and intelligent; the experience shines through from the author, both as priest, Bishop and theological teacher. This is perceived as a handbook maybe, a comfort probably; but well worth reading and not just by prospective ordinands but by the whole parish structure, to prepare them for what is expected of a Parish priest in the modern world. The cartoons by Ron are wonderful and the writing clear and connected to reality; do read it and keep the content in mind for all those who are preparing for ministry.
