The Holy Island is Lindisfarne and this is the story of that island written by a resident. It begins with the formation of the island in Neolithic times and tells the story right up to the present day. It is an exciting story, dealing as it does with the Roman and Saxon eras, the first monastic foundation by Aidan in 635 A.D., the St Cuthbert years, the controversies at the Synod of Whitby, the second monastery and the Benedictine years, the Reformation and the end of religious life on the island, the years when the most important building was a castle, and the building of the small Anglican church which stands today. In some ways it is a sad story, a story of decline. The island now is principally an attraction for tourists with many uninhabited holiday homes. However, it is a story worth telling and the many coloured photographs throughout the text add considerably to its interest.
