“Lord I believe help thou my unbelief”. The words of Thomas in Mark’s gospel ring true for so many of us, yes even those in ministerial positions. I had a colleague who once said to me that it was his doubt that kept his faith strong and challenged it every day. McGrath takes this challenging subject and lucidly argues the distinctions between certainty and proper confidence and also the doubters thought processes. The author is an academic through and through but doesn’t write in language that overwhelms the less theologically minded among us. It will become compelling reading once you enter the first chapter and could be a boon to all who have that doubt somewhere in the back of their mind.
