This is a 'cannot put it down' book. Mesu Andrews is a favourite author(ess) of mine. She brings Old Testament characters to life and her knowledge and details are second to none. I thoroughly recommend this book.

As expected, a wonderful book

Set at the time when Solomon ascended to the throne, I found this book extremely interesting. From a religious point of view, it definitely made me want to explore Ecclesiastes a bit more. It was fascinating to learn about some of the troubles and trials that Solomon endured, right from the start of his reign. People expected a lot from him; King David was a hard act to follow. It is well known that Solomon had many wives, all of whom he used to political advantage. I loved the personal tale that was told of at least one wife offered to him, by a desperate father who was actually bartering for the freedom of his beloved daughter. The author did make me question the fact that religion and politics seem inevitably bound together, and were very important in the days of old, when royalty had official influence over its kingdom. I enjoyed the sense of place that the author brought to this novel, and the descriptions of Solomon and his men at breakfast. I found some of the dialogue a little unconvincing at times, but the author will take the reader on an excellent voyage throughout the ancient kingdom. They will definitely feel that they know Solomon a bit better, and indeed be able to unlock the mysteries of his reign a little as the novel draws towards its close.

I enjoyed the sense of place that the author brought to this novel
