Hays is Dean and George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. His previous books include The Moral Vision of the New Testament (T&amp;T Clark, 1997). N. T. Wright is Research Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. He is the author of over forty books, including the internationally acclaimed Jesus and the Victory of God (SPCK, 1996).

The Good Book Stall

The scholars who gathered for the nineteenth annual Wheaton Theology Conference, in April 2010, came together to ‘honour’ the theological writing of Tom Wright, one of our leading theologians. They were united in respect for him, and also in personal friendship with him. ‘Laudatory celebration and critical scrutiny’ belong together in ‘truthful dialogue for those we love’, as one of the editors puts it. This book represents the proceedings of the conference. It falls into 2 Parts, “Jesus and the People of God” and “Paul and the People of God”. Each part follows the same pattern: a chapter by one of the participants, four in all, raising an area of criticism, with a brief response to each by Tom Wright; and then a much longer chapter by Tom Wright himself. He rounds off Part 1 by asking “Whence and Whither Historical Jesus Studies in the Life of the Church?” His thoughts are as lively and provocative as we have come to expect from him. He says he wants to “move to the attack, to expose and critique what seem to me demonstrable misreadings of the Canonical Gospels themselves.” We may be sure not everyone will agree! Then, in his concluding chapter to Part 2 (“Whence and Whither Pauline Studies in the Life of the Church”), Wright stresses the “worldwide symbol of the united church”, that was so important to Paul. This chapter does wet the appetite for Tom Wright’s eagerly anticipated book on Paul.
