This is not a book for the squeamish or the fastidious. Dillard‘s observations of nature are vivid, but too often coloured by violence for those of us who prefer their nature to be tranquil and picturesque. First published in 1974, perhaps the uncertain, restless and often disillusioned era in which it was written has influenced the writing. There are many anecdotes in the book that take the writer in surprising directions, and some demand notice being taken of them. For example, Dillard’s account of sight being given for the first time to the blind should be read by the many, not the few.
