James K. Beilby and Paul R. Eddy are both professors in the Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty at Bethel University in St Paul, Minnesota. Their books include The Historical Jesus: Five Views (SPCK 2010).

The Church has never made any definitive pronouncement on what it understands by justification in the way that it has with such doctrines as the nature of Christ or the persons of the Holy Trinity. All Christians would probably agree that we are justified by grace through faith, but when it comes to explaining what that means and how it works, there is a variety of views.   
This book does two things. First it sketches the history of the ideas of justification from the Early Church to the present. This is necessarily quite a brief overview but it gives the reader the major points at issue, not least in the contemporary church. Then second the book considers five principal ways in which justification has been understood in the Church. The five ways are termed: traditional reformed, progressive reformed, new perspective, deification, Roman Catholic. The choice probably reflects something of the geographical and theological context from which the two scholars write – which is Bethel University in St Paul's Minnesota - but it is always balanced, informed and fair.
