David Athey is a published poet, essayist, and short story writer. Originally from the Midwest, Athey received his Masters of Fine Arts from Hamline University, but now teaches English at Palm Beach Atlantic College and lives in West Palm Beach, FL, with his wife. Danny Gospel is his first novel.

About the Author

Soon his tranquil existence is broken open by--a dream, a vision, a sign?--a beautiful woman he is sure is his "beloved." Logic and sense tucked safely out of harm's way, Danny launches a quest to find his true love. Always good-natured, he is a hero on a journey--dreaming impossible dreams and, no matter how much he must suffer, pursuing romance and heavenly glory.

David Athey, a Midwesterner by birth, now teaches English and oversees the literary journal at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Athey has published poems, reviews, and short stories in numerous journals, including The Iowa Review, Oxford Magazine, and Harvard Review, and holds an MFA from Hamline University. He and his wife live in Palm Beach, Florida.

This humdrum dreamland of a novel surprised me with every path that the unlikely hero Danny Gospel stumbled over. Danny Gospel’s elegiac narrative is basically a dip into very personal memoirs, and a private peek into a painful family tragedy. The narrator himself is portrayed perhaps as ‘simple’ – aged 25, he was mainly responsible for delivering mail to old women who paid him in cookies. Apart from an estranged brother, Danny was completely alone in the world, and the heartache he suffers was almost too private for me to read, yet I was hooked by the author’s construction of Danny’s sorrow. I looked for any private bitterness that Danny might have against God but was not able to find any; Danny’s faith was like a rock and by the end he felt he still hadn’t ‘suffered enough’ to write a spiritual song. This piece of religious fiction is a cry to heaven and I would strongly recommend the book to my Christian acquaintances.
