By the age of 19, Anthony Gielty was one of Scotland's most violent prisoners, feared by his fellow convicts and the prison staff who struggled to contain him. Imprisoned for a murderous attack involving samurai swords, he had established himself inside, running a prosperous drug smuggling trade and intimidating anyone who stood in his way. When it appeared that only years in solitary confinement - the so-called Ghost Train - would subdue him, a fellow inmate suggested he speak to a priest. Drawing on all the Christian traditions he could find, Anthony discovered power to change in all of them - whether that was saying the rosary, reading his Bible, attending Mass or studying the lives of the saints. And so, slowly and painfully, began the journey that took him to a new life, and eventually a career outside of the prison walls, firstly working across Scotland to bring down sectarian barriers and then to introduce other prisoners to the new life he had found.

When still young, someone said of Anthony Gielty 'He's gonnae end up in the nick.' And he did - at the age of 17, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to ten years, some of which was spent in solitary confinement. At 19, he was placed in the most violent prison in Scotland. Anthony Gielty was viewed as too difficult a prisoner for the Scottish prison system. A vicious thug, he terrorised his fellow inmates - until he met Christ. Through a variety of forms of Christian spirituality, he became a changed man. Equally at home in a Bible study, an Evangelical service or a Catholic Mass, Anthony has worked tirelessly to bring Catholics and Protestants together across the sectarian divide in his native Scotland. As he says, he is now driven by 'a passion for the lost and a passion for unity in the Church.'

While serving a ten year sentence for attempted murder, Anthony Gielty became a Christian - finding his faith through both Catholic and Evangelical spirituality. Now living in Glasgow he works in prisons. He is also heavily involved in bridging Scotland's sectarian divide.

If you look at the 17 year old Anthony Gielty, and then the Anthony Gielty of today, you would not see the same person.

Back then you would have seen an up-and-coming boxing champion who was destined to end up in prison, which is exactly what he did after being convicted of attempted murder with a Samurai sword.

He was given 10 years in prison, some of which was spent in the prison's solitary confinement.

Two years later he was moved into another facility known as 'Scotland's Most Violent Prison' as he was simply too violent to contain where he was.

A truly remarkable story and one which will stay with me for a very long time to come. The honesty and sincerity with which it has been written permeates every page and is both awe-inspiring and humbling in equal measure. As a result of this, the reader does not so much feel that they are reading a sensationalist tabloid story- as so often books like this can come across- but an honest, measured testimony of one man's battle with his demons.

Intelligently written (and by an author much younger than his writng would suggest) Out of the Darkness is a book that will touch many lives and has a part to play in inter-denominational relations. Though Catholic, the author acknowledges- and his story testifies to the fact- that the Spirit is not confined to any one church or denomination; God will use whomever He chooses to carry out His work regardless of faith. This fact is made all the more poignant considering the authors back-drop of a city marred by sectarian division.

A truly remarkable story, Out of the Darkness is a must-read for all those, of all faiths or none, keen to know how and why lives can truly be transformed.
