Son of a missionary, born in the Congo, Billy endured a strict upbringing before escaping to the Army at 16. Despite the brutality and bullying he survived and did well, being fast-tracked for a commission. He met and married Bev, herself a corporal. Bev and the children suffered as a consequence, and Bev ultimately divorced him. Billy contemplated suicide when a friend reintroduced him to the God he had hated for 30 years. Bev too discovered Christianity: the two would be reconciled, remarry, and have two more children. ‘Storming Home’ is the life story of Billy Gilvear – a self-destructive hard man, celebrity bodyguard and boozer whose life was utterly transformed into a Baptist Minister, prison Chaplin, the Regional Director for the Eden Project and born-again Christian.

The strict upbringing as the son of a missionary meant Billy always wanted to escape his childhood faith. As soon as he hit 16 years old he enrolled in the Army and despite being bullied he flourished as a young solider, receiving a fast-track commission. He then met a young corporal called Bev and soon they entered married life together.

A bold career move from the Army into bodyguard work took him from dangerous war zones into the temptations of the celebrity world. He guarded:

Through a friend Billy rediscovered the God he had pushed aside, forgotten and ridiculed for the past 30 years.

As a result: Bev encounter Christ, they reconciled, remarried, had two more children and become Christians. Now Billy has become a Baptist Minister, prison Chaplin and evangelist, helping others find Christ as he so miraculously did.
