Description
This is the first new biography for over 50 years of Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, popularly known as Woodbine Willie. Studdert Kennedy was an Anglican priest and poet who volunteered as a chaplain to armed forces on the Western Front, and won the Military Cross for running into No Man's Land to help the wounded during an attack. He earned his nickname for offering both spiritual help and cigarettes to injured and dying soldiers. Post-war, he remained high in public awareness through his poetry and influential involvement in the Christian Socialist movement. Bob Holman's biography is based on original interviews with those few people who still remember Studdert Kennedy - including his son - and places him in his social and historical context with lessons that we can learn from him for today.
