The book is a revision, updating and popularizing of Part II of the author's more academic book, Pathways to Wholeness: Pastoral care in a postmodern age (OP). The Association of Christian Counsellors in the UK is concerned this material is no longer available, and David Runcorn is very supportive of the idea of its reissue in a more accessible form for a wider readership.

Dr Roger Hurding, now retired, has particular experience in the psychological aspects of illness, in counselling and psychotherapy. He is trained in spiritual direction and the Meyers Briggs approach to personality, and from 1980-2000 was a visiting lecturer at Trinity Theological College in Bristol, teaching pastoral care and counselling. He was a founder member of Network Christian Counselling in Bristol, heading up its initial training programme, and also an advisor in setting up the Association of Christian Counsellors.
